There’s a couple of towns in Tassie that reckon topiary might put them on the map. Oatlands has a bit more substance than that (try shopping for grown-up garden accessories at Provincial Interiors or a customised pure wool Casaveen sweater) but couldn’t resist this symbol of local activity and purpose!

There are many reasons to stay at Avalon – fab architecture, great design, privacy, the sense of luxury at having all that space to yourself, the wallabies and kookaburras that come for breakfast, sleeping and waking with the sounds of the waves breaking …but most of all, The View.

The mist doesn’t diminish the beauty of the wide Tamar River. Makes the stop at Koukla’s (285 Gravelly Beach Road)even better – where else can you find a cheerful second family of Greeks whipping up great home-cooked food at any hour of the day?

Superb brick barn right on the road. Long drystone wall, wrought iron gates, spectacular roadside planting of roses, bright orange hips flaming on grey winter stems. What’s the story here behind this restoration?? No lingering locals to ask, unfortunately.

They make tea in a pot with tea leaves, they make great scones, they’ll give you the ‘warts ‘n all ‘ answer to your questions and at Caltex Penguin, Wendy will cheerily fill your petrol tank for you. It’s a refreshing change from people who sit behind cash registers and we love it.
