On one of the dreary street corners on my way across from SoHo to Chelsea I came across this fenced-off lot. Two sides of the lot were covered in hand painted tiles. Once, there was a “title” – Tile America – but now some of the tiles have fallen off. I assume it was a post 9/11 project, but it’s not clear. Most of the tiles have some variant of God Bless America on them. Stars, stripes, love hearts, open hands, birds of peace…all great symbols. But what now?
